LE Scoped Carbine Duty Ammunition for Designated Marksman
I regularly see well-intentioned trainers and industry reps recommend ammunition for law enforcement designated marksman and snipers which does not meet terminal ballistic standards, has other detrimental bullet design flaws, or lacks general features which are necessary for LE use. Current ammunition that does meet these requirements is designed for patrol carbines with no consideration for exterior ballistics or performance at distance. In my opinion, an ideal 5.56 DM load does not currently exist.
LE ammunition (in general) needs to have:
• Flash suppressed powder
• Crimped bullet and primer – What you can get away with in a match with a bolt gun, may not work when subject to the violent feeding process of a full pressure cartridge in a suppressed semi-auto rifle. I have seen primers fall out and block triggers and prevent a bolt from locking, and I have seen extreme bullet setback during feeding. (Peak Alloy cases does not need crimping due to tensile strength of the case.)
• Waterproof case mouth and primer – I have observed ammunition fail to fire after being left out in the rain during a training day.
• “Barrier blind” bullets – We figured this out in the 1980s. Many police gunfights happen around motor vehicles. Bullets must be able to penetrate barriers like windshields and body work without breaking apart, with minimal defection, and still make it through a human skull. Common scenarios could include hostage rescue, a car-to-car gunfight, UC drug buy overwatch, etc. A patrol DM is likely going to have to do everything cops do with the same rifle. The two options to meet this are are bonded or solid copper projectiles.
• Powder checks and visual cartridge inspection
-Match accuracy is required not just for long distance shots, but also to reduce margin of error when there are dirty backgrounds, hostages or bystanders in proximity, or partial exposure targets. Having trained officers across the US for the role, I have a pretty good idea what rifle setups are ideal and are in common use, and the likely situations they will be used in.
-Sniper and Designated Marksman ammunition should be designed/optimized around engagements to 500 yards from a 14.5-16″ barrel in 5.56mm and a 14.5-20″ barrel for .308/6.5CM. I am aware that the “average” sniper shot per the American Sniper Association is from less than 100 yards. I also know that cops are doing more overwatch missions than ever before, and they are usually responsible for areas way beyond that. Threat snipers and rural manhunts for rifle armed subjects are also a thing, as is the proliferation of optics on civilian owned rifles. There are also entire regions of the country where the driveway begins hundreds of yards from the house; not everyone lives in a suburb.
-“Why not just go to a larger caliber?”, many ask. 5.56mm carbines are prevalent and here to stay, with recent case material developments about to increase their effectiveness dramatically, as documented in my LE Designated Marksman Survey results. Small-frame, scoped gas guns are exploding in popularity for good reason. They are lighter, more compact, maneuverable during vehicle deployment and inside structures, and more reliable than large-frame gas guns.
-As for 6ARC, I advise agencies against jumping on the boutique cartridge bandwagon, as most of the ones I have had in class are not 100% reliable. That cartridge size and shoulder angle cause problems when fed into a small frame AR, in addition to bolt breakages and magazine issues.
-There are certain bullet design features (that I have personally seen cause problems) which agencies should be aware of when selecting an appropriate load.
• Open-Tip Match (OTM): Insufficient terminal effects through auto glass so these are a non-starter. Sierra 77 grain Match Kings, Berger 73 grain OTM, and Hornady 75 grain TAP are the most common examples of bullets in this category.
• Stubby bullets: poor external ballistics, especially in wind past 300 yards. If you do use these, ensure you use 5.56 pressure ammo. Speer 55-64 grain Gold Dots, Nosler 64 grain BSB (used in Winchester duty ammo), Federal TBBC are all examples of this.
• Secant ogive: LE barrels are usually higher round count and get replaced way less than a sponsored PRS shooter’s bolt gun barrels. Secant ogives are unforgiving in worn leades and can result in suppressor baffle strikes and precision issues.
• .223 Pressure loads: These give up velocity too fast, resulting in increased wind drift, reduced danger space, and going transonic at close ranges (especially in shorter barrels).
• Plastic tips: they can break off during feeding and lodge in the chamber or bolt lug recess. Hornady ELDs seem to be particularly bad in my experience, and I even find them broken inside boxes of component bullets. Speer’s new “Impact” line (tipped Gold Dot) and Nosler’s Accubond & Accubond LR do not seem to exhibit this problem.
• Solid copper projectiles: Their length takes up critical powder space needed for higher velocities. (A Barnes 70 grain TSX is longer than a 77 grain Sierra Match King.) They can also cause excessive fouling which results in velocity climbing, pressure spikes, and eventually popped primers. I believe solid copper projectiles don’t have the “give” to the rifling lands that lead core bullets do. If you use these, stay on top of barrel cleaning every couple hundred rounds.
The ideal LE Designated Marksman load:
Features:
• Heavy for caliber, aerodynamic projectile that is barrier-blind (bonded lead core preferred)
• Waterproof and crimped case mouth and primer
• Temperature stable & flash suppressed powder
• Low muzzle velocity standard deviation
• Full pressure (5.56mm, not .223)
Capabilities:
• Must stay out of transonic range to 500 yards under standard atmospheric conditions (SAC) from a 14.5” barrel
• Acceptable penetration in ballistic gelatin at distance (200-300y) and through laminate glass/other barriers (to 100y)
• Match accuracy (Goal: less than 1 MOA, threshold: less than 2 MOA)
THE CURRENT STATE OF THE ISSUE AND POTENTIAL REMEDIES (FEB 2026):
• The ideal Law Enforcement Designated Marksman load would be 5.56mm Peak Alloy cases loaded with a 73-77 grain, bonded lead-core bullet. Peak Alloy cases are made with a nickle-plated steel alloy that can safely handle well above SAAMI pressures and allow for major velocity increases, particularly out of short barrels. This will flatten the trajectory of any bullet loaded in them. Going forward, I believe all LE rifle duty loads should use this casing.
• Another option is to bring back the 77 Grain TOTM (Tactical Open Tip Match) design. This bullet was designed years ago but never went anywhere. (Imagine a bonded 77 grain SMK.) The US Army shut that program down to force M855A1 on everyone. M855A1 is unacceptable for an LE load due to its behavior through auto-glass. Federal could potentially bring it back if they don’t produce a 5.56 Impact bullet.
• 75 grain Gold Dot is another viable option, but not in it’s current .223 pressure loading and accuracy spec.
• As of this writing, I feel the best option for currently produced and available 5.56 duty quality ammunition that meets terminal ballistic parameters is the Federal 64 grain Bonded #LE556T4. It is full pressure, more accurate than previous bonded bullets, has temp stable powder, a bullet with somewhat of a boattail, and lacks most detrimental features. It lacks the heavier bullet weight and aerodynamic design that I feel is ideal for longer distances. It is also very pricey.
• Nosler has recently released a LE 70 grain Accubond loading (#39688). As tested, I found it did not have a crimped primer, appeared to be loaded to .223 pressures (2527 fps from my 14.5” SOLGW Mk1), and I did not observe case mouth or primer sealant. It was accurate and the bullet checks all the boxes though. Perhaps they can design an Accubond LR bullet that expands at lower velocities (1300 fps).
