New LE DM Ammunition Option: Speer 5.56mm 75gr Gold Dot

After many years of me bugging the industry to make an optimized LE Designated Markman/SPR ammunition in 5.56mm, TKG (Federal/Speer) came through!

5.56mm 75gr Gold Dot:

  • Full pressure
  • Match accurate
  • Temp stable powder
  • Low SDs
  • Heavy for caliber, bonded projectile
  • Crimped & waterproof primers & case mouth

This is the test batch and it performed very well from my SOLGW Mk1 (14.5″) with Nightforce ATACR 1-8:

  • Sub-MOA groups
  • Avg 2680 fps
  • Single-digit SDs

It should be available Fall 2026, and I won’t be surprised if it kills off other LE SKUs, as it checks a lot of boxes.

The original 75 grain Gold Dot cartridge was a SBR load with a patrol rifle accuracy standard and was downloaded to .223 pressure. This was due to agencies buying non-duty grade rifles, adding suppressors, then complaining that the ammo was too hot. It also had a nickel-plated case which I don’t feel helps SDs or consistent neck tension. Side note: 62gr Gold Dot and the Federal 62gr T3 load were designed for 16″ barrel carbines like Colt 6920s, and I wouldn’t use 55gr Gold Dot unless I was stuck with 1/12″ twist, surplus M16A1s. (How 60 year old barrels are not completely shot out by now baffles me.)

Remember, many LE gunfights happen around vehicles and OTM/SMK projectiles are absolutely not acceptable for LE use. Even on the .mil side, we knew 20 years ago that MK262 was lacking. However, getting a hit with service rifle competition ammo (on a 140lb guy in pajamas 600 yards away) was better than having no chance of a hit with the only other option, M855 ball. ATK developed a bullet specifically for improved terminal ballistics in SPRs in the mid-2000s, the 77 grain SOST, however, the US Army killed the program to push M855A1.

I have documented numerous recent failures in LE shootings caused by improper rifle ammunition selection for the foreseeable conditions. (Please contact me if your agency had one.) There is a penetration and barrier standard for duty ammo that has existed for decades, but for some reason, admins/chiefs and uninformed firearms cadre choose to ignore it. LE is more likely to engage a dude wearing a Carhartt jacket over a hoody through a windshield or body panel, than some scenario where a 55 grain prairie dog bullet is needed due to “overpenetration”.

I know LE probably doesn’t need to shoot people 600 yards away. This is more about reducing margin of error on tighter mid-range shots in the overwatch role, while still being an effective round in a “typical” LE gunfight. (See my previous post on LE Scoped Carbine Ammunition). I am still hoping for this to be loaded in Peak Alloy cases in the future, but this was a way to get a 95% solution ASAP.
